The European People's Party has included the Cyprus problem in its top ten priorities for the next five years, President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides said.

Answering questions from journalists, coming to the European People's Party meeting in Brussels today, and asked if he could give an update on the meeting he had with Ms. Holguín, President Christodoulides said:

"Let me begin by first expressing my satisfaction that the European People's Party in the ten key priorities it has set for the next five years, after my intervention, in coordination with the President of the Parliament, we have succeeded in including the Cyprus problem among the ten most important priorities of the European Union.

And this is an indication, not only of the messages we are sending to Cyprus, but also of the messages we are sending to the international community, and the messages that are sent through the clear, I repeat, after coordinated efforts by us and the President of the Parliament, specific reference to the role of the European Union.

Beyond that, I had a very productive, very concrete discussion with the personal envoy of the Secretary-General. A lot was said, we exchanged very specific views, and upon my return to Cyprus I will convene the National Council to brief the leaders of the parliamentary parties. I will also share with them my thoughts on the next steps, to see how together, because it is only through collectivity that we can, on the one hand, achieve national goals, but also face the challenges."

Asked whether the names of the candidates for presidents of the European Union institutions have been "locked", the President of the Republic said:

"I hope we have them "locked". There are some reactions, they are known, from some circles. Last night I had an exchange of messages with the Prime Minister of Italy. We have arranged to meet today, before the European Council, precisely to discuss this issue. I will inform the members of the European People's Party of the exchange of views and of the meeting that I will have, and I hope that there will be a conclusion. Decisions must be taken at the next session of the European Parliament. We have serious challenges ahead of us, which we need to focus on."

Asked to comment on the content of his discussions with the Prime Minister of Italy, the President of the Republic said: "Mrs. Meloni mentioned to me some of her approaches. I have to say that on some of the issues she mentioned I see and understand that she is right. It is for this reason that we have agreed to meet before the European Council and whatever role we can play in order to achieve results, as Cyprus we will do so, always within our capabilities, in the good relations we have with all Member States. Today we must have an agreement."

Asked how he sees the Hungarian Presidency starting July 1, Christodoulides said: "Let's wait and see. I am optimistic at the end of the day, as a European Union, despite the difficulties, despite the different opinions, internally as a family we always find a way, and when there is a will, there is a way. And I want to believe that there is a will. We will see."
