The President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Christodoulides made statements to the media in Cairo late this afternoon, in the framework of a joint press conference with European leaders and the President of Egypt, following their meeting in the framework of the EU-Egypt Partnership and Comprehensive Relationship.
In his remarks, President Christodoulides, among others, expressed great honor and satisfaction for his participation in this "historic day", said that "today marks the launch of the EU-Egypt Partnership and Comprehensive Relationship", expressing thanks to the President of the European Commission for leading this action and signing the Joint Declaration to this effect.
He added: "It is a day of political commitment to cooperation and leadership by the EU and President Sisi."
Cyprus is not only the geographically closest EU member state to Egypt. Cyprus and Egypt share a deep historical friendship that in recent years has become a truly and profoundly strategic partnership that reflects the solid foundations of our true friendship."
President Christodoulides further noted.
Today we are proud to witness this development.
The Joint Declaration signed a short while ago marks the beginning of a new era in EU-Egypt relations. The wide range and strategic nature of the many areas mentioned in the Declaration fully reflect Egypt's irreplaceable role in the South East of Europe.
Today we are taking a substantial step towards becoming stronger in addressing common challenges and realizing the potential of our cooperation that knows no boundaries and expects to be further exploited.
With Egypt we also share a common vision for a peaceful Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. It is a vision of which President Sisi is a key architect in building and implementing, demonstrating real leadership."
Egypt plays a critical role in addressing several crises, from Libya, Sudan, Palestine and the Red Sea."
Referring to Gaza in particular, President Christodoulides said: "President Sisi is making tremendous efforts to achieve a ceasefire, to prevent the conflict from spreading, to achieve a lasting peace and to provide much needed humanitarian relief for the civilian population of Gaza. I would like, once again, to thank President Sisi for his country's tireless efforts in this direction.
In this context, I would like to underline again that the displacement of Gazans is unacceptable and endangers the national security of neighbouring countries.
We all agree that it is extremely important to provide more assistance to Gaza.
To this end, since the beginning of the war, Cyprus has been working to provide a complementary option for the international community regarding the provision of assistance.
Last week, Cyprus together with other partners including the EU, always under the leadership of Ursula (von der Leyen) created a secure humanitarian sea corridor.
I would also like to stress that this effort is of a purely humanitarian nature and complementary to existing routes and existing mechanisms."
In conclusion, President Christodoulides said: "Cyprus will continue to work with its partners in the European Union to see this strategic partnership come to fruition, particularly with a view to ensuring peace and stability and economic prosperity in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa."
