The President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides chaired today a meeting at the Presidential Palace on issues related to the upgrading of Higher Education in Cyprus.

At the meeting, the Minister of Education presented the final recommendations on the issue, as a result of the consultation with the other Ministries.
At the end of the meeting, the Minister of Education, in her statements to journalists, said: "The enlarged ministerial meeting on the upgrading of Higher Education in our country, a very important issue, which is included in the Governance Programme, has been concluded.
I note that the Higher Education sector is not only important for educational reasons, it is also important for economic reasons, in a country. The meeting was preceded by dialogue and consultation between the competent Ministries, and during the meeting we focused on four main pillars.
In the pillar of internationalization, of promoting the quality of higher education in our country, of "branding", as the term is known, it was decided to cooperate with the Ministry of Finance, so that this can be promoted as soon as possible. We also discussed the amendment of the legislation, and the categorisation of higher education institutions, in order to improve quality and attract more students. Very briefly, it is very important for us that the programmes offered are related to the needs of the labour market, but above all that our graduates have employment opportunities. We have therefore worked systematically to link higher education, at all levels, with the needs of the labour market, making use of research results. Three major surveys are already being conducted through the Recovery and Resilience Fund by our Ministry, which monitor and record the needs in the labour market and these data are being given, and will continue to be given, systematically to all relevant Ministries, in order to have the expected results.
Finally, we discussed the issue of providing scholarships and incentives to foreign students to attend programmes in our country.
Finally, we discussed the issue of providing scholarships and incentives to foreign students to attend programmes in our country.
In general, the decision is that we are proceeding with the submission of a proposal to the Council of Ministers, which will relate more broadly to the issue of upgrading and developing higher education in our country and very soon we will proceed with the amendment of the legislation and all the other actions I have mentioned after the necessary consultation with all stakeholders, "said the Minister of Education in conclusion.
