The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Mrs. Athena Michaelidou attended today and addressed the opening of the Pancyprian Training of Educational Psychologists in Crisis Management, which is being held from June 3-6, in Larnaca, by the National Association of School Psychologists of the USA.
In statements to journalists regarding the training, the Minister said: "Today begins our four-day conference, organized by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth for educational psychologists nationwide, on crisis management. It is a topic that we have been concerned with over time and especially in recent years, the importance is very high. The conference coincided with too many crises experienced by modern schools. That is why we consider it very important that we have experts from abroad who, together with our own specialised staff, will support our educational psychologists, who are a very useful team in our schools, with experiential workshops with a lot of information and information. They are a group of people who are called upon to manage complex, complicated, sensitive issues in our schools and they certainly need training, ongoing empowerment and the full support of our Ministry, which they will have. Training and empowerment comes together with a lot of other support that we give, so that they can cope with the difficulties of everyday school life and of course support our children," the Education Minister concluded.
Afterwards, Ms Michailidou answered questions from journalists.
Asked whether educational psychologists will apply the new knowledge and practices they will acquire through the conference in our schools, the Minister noted: "Exactly they will get a lot of practical ideas on how to approach children better, how to support them and especially on crisis management issues, any crises no longer relate to one area, something extraordinary or something urgent in the school only, but we deal with them on many levels."
Asked regarding what new things will be implemented in our schools with the new school year, Michailidou noted: "According to both our announcements and our planning we are moving forward with several new elements. First of all, there are the updated curricula, that is, the content of all lessons, all grades, all ages is being modernized, the working groups have delivered them to us, there is a quality control of the work these days, so that we can give them to our teachers, post them and thus the school year will start with less material and more focus on skills and abilities instead of memorization. We will continue this work, which is ongoing and dynamic. We are also beginning with expansions and improvements to the Full Day School. We are beginning with a greater emphasis and many more programs in Technical Education. Of course, we are also beginning with our emphasis on new technologies; we have already equipped our schools with the appropriate infrastructure to enable them to evolve into what we call a modern school with the judicious use of technology. These are just a few of the many important things we will do with the start of the school year."
