The situation in Pyla requires very fine and specific handling, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letibiotis said today.

In a statement to reporters at the Presidential Palace, the Spokesman, asked about the situation in Pyla and the diplomatic efforts being made, said: "Meetings have been held since Thursday, from the very first moment, and are ongoing (meetings) under the President of the Republic and in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Commander of the CPS, who is also the head of the National Security Council, as well as the head of the National Guard and the Ministry of Defence."

The President of the Republic, as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, are in contact with all the Permanent Members of the Security Council. We also expect the United Nations tonight, when the Security Council meets, to meet their terms of reference as well. At this moment, very fine and specific handling is required."

Asked how the Government is responding to criticism of the fact that a meeting of the National Council was called after ten days, the Spokesman said: "I recall that the convening of the National Council had already been announced by the President of the Republic that it would be held in view of his going to New York for the UN General Assembly and it is for this reason that the National Council is being convened, to inform the political leaders about the President's going to New York."
