These are not slogans of racist content or religious intolerance, but fan slogans related to football teams that have been inscribed on the walls of a mosque in Limassol, and such slogans have also been inscribed in the wider region, Government Spokesman Mr. Constantine Letibiotis, noting that instructions have been given as such inscriptions are cleaned.

He also stressed that the Republic of Cyprus respects and preserves the religious monuments of our Turkish Cypriot compatriots and does not abandon them or provide them for any other use.

Similar inscriptions, apart from the wall near the mosque, unfortunately exist on many walls in the wider area.

In his statements to journalists at his Media Briefing at the Presidential Palace, asked to comment on the issue of slogans on a mosque in Limassol, the Representative said: "First of all, let us make it clear that these are not slogans of racist content or religious intolerance, but fan slogans related to football teams.

Similar inscriptions, in addition to the wall near the mosque, unfortunately exist on too many masonry walls in the wider area.

Instructions have been given for these inscriptions to be cleaned in the area.

As is well known, issues relating to religious respect and the preservation of cultural heritage are approached by the Republic of Cyprus with due care and respect.

It should be recalled, moreover, that in the context of this understanding, the Government announced last January the 14 measures that are relevant to the daily life of our Turkish Cypriot compatriots and one of these measures is the provision of further facilities for access to Muslim monuments in the free areas.

Finally, as a State of Law that actively demonstrates its respect for the religious heritage of our Turkish Cypriot compatriots, we have provided for the preservation of their Muslim religious monuments and especially for the preservation of their devotional character. None of the Muslim religious monuments have been abandoned nor have they been given for any other use."
