The Government is closely monitoring the situation in Pyla and is continuing its diplomatic contacts, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letibiotis said today.

Speaking to reporters at the Presidential Palace after the meeting between President Nicos Christodoulides and Speaker of the House of Representatives Anita Demetriou, the Spokesman said: "The Speaker of the Parliament requested a meeting with the President of the Republic, which took place today.

It was a very constructive meeting, during which the President of the Republic and the Speaker of the Parliament discussed further coordination in light of both the recent incidents in Pyla, the illegal plans of the occupation regime and the statement by the Security Council (SC), which was welcomed by all political forces of the country and the Speaker of the Parliament herself.

At the meeting they also discussed further coordination regarding the implementation of the government's work, the promotion of bills in view of the new parliamentary term starting in September."

Asked to comment on new statements by the Turkish Cypriot leadership, the Spokesman said: "The President of the Republic said yesterday that the best response to the public statements of both Mr Tatar and Mr Erdogan has been given by the SC itself. Diplomacy has proven in recent days that when it is mobilised, when it works properly, it can deliver results. We have seen an unprecedented reaction from the international community, we have seen a clear positioning on the part of the SC, which sends the right messages. We remain that credible Government. The Republic of Cyprus remains committed, faithful to what the President of the Republic has been advocating and projecting from the very first moment, and we reiterate our readiness to resume negotiations on the basis of the agreed framework. In this objective, we will remain and we will insist, because if the latest plans of the occupying regime have proven anything, it is the necessity of a peaceful, viable, just solution to the Cyprus problem."

In response to a question, the Spokesman said: "What is important and in line with the UNSC statement - and our position from the outset was and remains - is that we do not accept any challenge to the status of the buffer zone. We hope that this calm will remain in Pyla. As the Republic of Cyprus we are following closely and diplomatic contacts are continuing."

Asked if, for example, the Pyroio barrier could be opened to allow the Greek Cypriot side to accept some change in Pyla, the Spokesman said: "We are not even going to discuss any planning that calls into question the status of the buffer zone. The issue of the Athienou - Pyroio barrier has been raised repeatedly by the President of the Republic and it is an issue he has raised recently."
