The Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Ms Marilena Evangelou, in statements after today's session of the Parliamentary Committee on Interior, said that she informed the Committee on Interior in relation to the responsibilities of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare regarding immigration. In the context of the broader policy for dealing with the migration issue, always within the framework of legality, the compliance of the Republic of Cyprus with international conventions and the human-centred approach to the issue, the Government is promoting policies, measures and actions.
"The efforts made by the Ministry of Interior, which is the Ministry responsible for the migration issue, the relevant Ministries and the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare are well known. We are in full coordination and cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, so that holistic decisions are taken and the problem is addressed. With regard to the responsibilities of the Ministry of Social Welfare in relation to migration, we are working on a specific plan to streamline benefits, but also to link benefits with social work. This is being worked on at departmental level. An inter-ministerial meeting will soon follow between the relevant ministries and the Deputy Ministry in order to put forward our proposals and take decisions, which will be announced."
The Deputy Minister also informed the Interior Committee of the Parliament in relation to the actions of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, within the framework of its responsibilities, regarding Chloraka and the operation to remove the vulnerable people living there from the complex, transferring them to a safe place. These are about ten families with children, as well as a small number of pregnant women who have already been moved. The Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare dutifully went to Chloraka, as well as Limassol, after the known incidents that occurred, to record and address the immediate needs of the vulnerable people affected.
In response to a journalist's question about the control that is carried out in the shelters rented by applicants for international protection and whether it makes complaints to the competent bodies if it is found that the living conditions are not suitable ,Ms. Evangelou replied that the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare goes to the shelters and within the framework of its responsibilities checks the living conditions of the people staying there. As far as the vulnerable are concerned, if it finds that there are conditions that are not satisfactory, then the social workers advise these people to find another place to live and the Local Government and the Provincial Administrations are informed and they are the ones legally responsible to determine whether or not a building is unsuitable.
Furthermore, he clarified that with regard to the accommodation in Chloraka, since there was a prohibition order, the material reception conditions were not paid to those who declared that they had an address in that accommodation.
