"The Legal Service evaluated the existing evidence and, as usual, reported to the Court in detail the reasons that led to the decision to suspend the prosecution. I consider that the statement submitted to the Court was absolutely clear and explanatory and I would suggest to all those who make criticisms of the way the Legal Service handled the case to at least read what was said in Court," said today the Attorney General of the Republic Mr. George Savvidis, when asked by media representatives about the decision of the Legal Service of the Republic to request the suspension of the criminal prosecution of the T/C lawyer Akan Kioursiat.
In connection with a fatal traffic accident in 2012, in Limassol, with the victim Andreas Loizou, 17, formerly from Mouttayaka, and asked whether it is the popular outcry that led to the criminal prosecution for the accident, the Attorney General of the Republic said that the re-evaluation of the whole procedure was the result of a request by the victim's family. "There had been an investigation at the initial stage. Very recently a letter was received from the lawyers of the victim's relatives requesting that the whole process be re-evaluated. There was, as you know, an investigation by the police. The conclusion of the investigation was handed over to us and yesterday, in a multi-page statement, we explained precisely the reasons that led us to the decision not to proceed with the prosecution of one driver who, in our opinion, if we had to evaluate the facts today, we might have proceeded with a criminal prosecution [AGAINST HIM].
As for the allegation of wilful neglect of duty for the officers, we considered that for one of them, it was appropriate to proceed with criminal proceedings. It goes without saying, and I want to make this clear, that every man is innocent until proven otherwise by a competent court, and prosecution does not immediately imply guilt. We also said that any other actions or omissions of other police officers may be a matter that could be studied within the framework of possible disciplinary proceedings by the police," Savvidis said.
The statements of the Attorney General of the Republic were made on the sidelines of the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Public Service Commission and the Supreme Personnel Selection Board of Greece, at the amphitheatre of the Press and Information Office, in Nicosia.
