The Attorney General of the Republic, Mr George L. Savvidis, attended the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Justice and Public Order, where the issue of the security and salary upgrade of public prosecutors was discussed under the ex officio procedure.
In his statements after the conclusion of the Commission's meeting, the Attorney General of the Republic, expressing full support for what he described as the just demands of the public prosecutors, said:
"My presence as well as that of two Attorneys General of the Republic at today's meeting of the Legal Committee to discuss the ex officio issue, the financial upgrading of salaries and the security issues of the public prosecutors, is indicative of the importance that the [LEGAL] Service attaches to these two very serious issues. I want to make it clear, as I did in the Legal Affairs Committee, that the leadership of the Legal Service stands with the public prosecutors on both of their requests, and of course we had already taken action on both before the issue was even brought before the House.
We are incredibly disturbed and troubled, and we condemn with all our heart and soul, the bombings and other forms of attack on public prosecutors. We have shown this from the very first moment and have taken action from the very first moment with the Police, which is the body responsible for the protection of public prosecutors and all our colleagues involved in criminal matters. Because it is not only the public prosecutors, it has many other lawyers in the Legal Service who deal with this issue. The body therefore is the Police and I think it is their responsibility to take the measures that are needed to protect all colleagues.
With regard to the financial issue, we have set up a collaborative team with the public prosecutors, which includes two Public Prosecutors of the Republic, to promote their just request for a financial upgrade. I believe that despite what has been heard today from various quarters, this matter can, and should, and we will move it forward without waiting for the passage of any other bills relating to the Legal Service."
