President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides tonight expressed sadness because, as he said, some people, judging by the way they themselves behave, are making some references to his recent trip to Athens, where he attended the final match of the Europa Conference League.
In his remarks to journalists, while attending the event of the Office of the Head of Humanitarian Affairs, Missing and Trapped Persons and OELMEK, at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, and asked to comment on a British media report that British MPs are calling for the launch of direct flights between the UK and the pseudo-state, the President of the Republic said: "Such attempts are well known, especially by British MPs, some of whom have even been illegally granted property in the occupied territories - such cases have come to light in the past.
Britain is a Permanent Member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, it is a guarantor power in Cyprus, and under no circumstances can it take actions that go against the very resolutions it has voted for as a Permanent Member of the Security Council."
In response to a reporter's remark that the Turkish Energy Minister announced a new descent for drilling in the Eastern Mediterranean, meaning the Cypriot EEZ, the President of the Republic said: "I will not comment on statements. I will not comment on statements. There is an attempt on the part of Mrs Holguín. Whatever arises, we are here and we are in a position to deal with it. I am not going to enter into a public debate on such statements, in some cases provocative statements. Such very serious issues require seriousness and handling through diplomatic channels, using all the tools at our disposal, especially with regard to the European Union (EU). We are here and we will deal with them."
Asked to refer to his trip to Athens to attend the Olympiacos match, the President of the Republic said: "At my personal expense, I travelled to Athens with my daughter to watch the game. At my personal expense we stayed one night in a hotel in Athens. Why am I saying this? Because I really regret that some people, possibly judging by the way they themselves behave, are making certain references. Finally, I understand the political climate, the party scene, we're going to an election, but let's keep the bar a little high, especially when it comes to personal issues. In the context of democracy, of course criticism is welcome and appreciated, but let's not level everything. Let some people not place themselves, judging how they themselves might have behaved."
Asked if the Amalthea initiative is continuing as normal, the President said: "Of course it is continuing normally. In fact, yesterday I had a very good meeting with senators from the United States who visited our country precisely on this issue, praising the role played by the Republic of Cyprus in this matter."
