President of the Hellenic Republic Nicos Christodoulides today referred to the possibility of another visit to Lebanon together with the President of the European Commission on the migration issue.

Speaking at the 14th Economic Conference in Nicosia, and asked to comment on statements made by Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, the President of the Republic said. We do not work through public statements. We are working with the United Nations so that there are prospects for movement on the Cyprus problem towards the resumption of talks.

It is not easy, but the effort continues on a daily basis. I would not at this time like to make public anything of all that we are doing towards the resumption of talks."

Asked if he was informed about the ideas that the United Nations (UN) Secretary General (SG) was going to present, the President said: "I have information, of course I have information that the Secretary-General himself conveyed to me. I have an update on what was conveyed in the debate, but I do not think it is something that I should make public. I am focusing on the substance, which is how to achieve the resumption of the talks."

Asked if this is what was also said between the President and the UN Secretary General, President Christodoulides said: "The Secretary-General does not say different things depending on his interlocutor. It was specific proposals, specific discussion. But I don't think it is appropriate to make anything public. We are focusing on the substance."

Asked about the results of his contacts in Lebanon, the President said: "We agreed on some things yesterday during my contacts, particularly with the Prime Minister of the country, following up on what I discussed with the Chairperson of the Commission. We are in contact. I reported after my return from Lebanon on the results of my discussions and I do not rule out visiting Lebanon again soon with the Chairperson of the Commission. We have agreed on some things. The important thing is the implementation of everything we agreed on."

Asked about the Amalthea project, the President said: "Preparatory work is proceeding. Yesterday we had a visit here by the competent minister of the United Arab Emirates, so that all that was agreed during the meeting of senior officials, which took place in Cyprus with the participation of more than 40 countries, can be taken forward.

It will be a blessing if there is a ceasefire, but even if there is no ceasefire the needs for humanitarian aid are there. I think the key is the completion of the work that is being done on the US side. I expect in the coming days that this work will be completed, which will give a new impetus to the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus, but also to the sending of humanitarian aid."

Asked to comment on AKEL's criticism of the appointment of the new Governor of the Central Bank, the President of the Republic said: "I did not expect AKEL to make such a comment. It is under the AKEL government that we had three finance ministers, bankers. So, before we go out to make statements, it is good to be a little careful."
