The Government has reacted immediately to Turkey's action to issue a navtex in the maritime space under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Cyprus by issuing an anti-navtex, President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides said today.
In his statements to journalists after the annual memorial service of the hero Grigoris Afxentiou at the Holy Monastery of Panagia Machairas, the President of the Republic, asked about the navtex issued by Turkey, said that "we have reacted by issuing anti-navtex. Asked to comment on these actions on the part of Turkey and whether they help to resume the talks, President Christodoulides said that "they certainly do not help. It is a common tactic used by Turkey, I neither belittle nor underestimate it, and it is for this reason that we reacted immediately."
In response to a reporter's remark that the US State Department Spokesman announced that contacts with the Republic of Cyprus on the creation of the sea corridor to Gaza are continuing and asked if there is any development on this issue, the President said: "In the past few days a member of the US National Security Council was in Cyprus precisely for this reason. We are discussing with the US and I hope that soon we can announce something concrete."
Asked whether people can pass through the barricades to the free areas regardless of whether they have entered the island illegally, the President of the Republic said: "No, there are relevant checks, the systems of both the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Justice have now been unified. It was a weakness that existed and such a decision has been taken recently in the Council of Ministers."
