The President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Christodoulides tonight made a recommendation to the President of the Cyprus Football Federation (CFF) and gave specific instructions to the Minister of Justice in relation to the new incidents at a match in Limassol, he said, while noting that everything that happened is unacceptable and cannot continue.
In his statements to journalists, coming to the National Sports Awards ceremony of the Cyprus Sports Organisation (CSO), and asked to comment on today's incident of the rescue of migrants, including children, east of Cape Greco, the President of the Republic said: "For the past 11 months we have taken very concrete measures that have produced results, they are not just statements."
The number of migrants coming to Cyprus has decreased. Those who leave our country are clearly more, more than those who come. The numbers have increased, more than 60%, in departures from 2022 and at the same time we are living this drama that we are experiencing today.
I want to thank the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus for responding immediately. You understand that when lives are at stake there is no other choice and they were right to do so.
This is an issue that we are raising at the level of the European Union (EU), but also in Lebanon, and very recently we sent a mission to discuss this issue with the Lebanese Government. The Lebanese Government must also take its own measures because we know that these are Syrians who come from Lebanon."
Asked whether the measures announced for Turkish Cypriots include granting citizenship to children from mixed marriages, the President of the Republic said: "Expect the announcement of the measures to be made in the next few days and then we will comment on it."
Asked if these measures will be announced before Ms Holguín comes to Cyprus, President Christodoulides replied in the affirmative.
Asked if Ms Holguín will have a joint meeting with him and the Turkish Cypriot leader, the President of the Republic said: "We do not have any information about a joint meeting. But I know that Ms Holguín is preparing a programme during which she will have many contacts, of course with both leaders, but also with civil society, and we expect to receive her."
Asked to refer to today's incidents during a match in Limassol despite the measures taken by the police, the President of the Republic said: "Ten minutes ago I spoke with the Minister of Justice and with the President of the CMP. [A] specific recommendation was made to the President of the CMP, [A] specific instruction was given to the Minister of Justice. Everything I saw before I came here is unacceptable and cannot continue."
