The Republic of Cyprus has officially given its consent to the person whom the United Nations Secretary General (UNSG) intends to appoint as envoy for the Cyprus problem, President Nicos Christodoulides said today, underlining his readiness for an immediate resumption of the talks.
In his statements to journalists in Paphos District, asked what the Fitch Rating Agency's upgrade means for Cyprus, the President of the Republic replied that it means "a vote of confidence in the Cypriot economy, a vote of confidence in the prudent policy we are pursuing in the economic sector, which is summed up in the triptych of fiscal responsibility, a strong financial system and continuous bold reforms.
We will continue on the same path, we will continue together with society, and on the occasion of the debate that took place yesterday and the vote by the Parliament on the issue of divestment - to welcome the attitude of the parties - I call on the parties to work together to face the challenges together.
A strong economy is the one that will allow us to develop a more targeted social policy, to address the major challenges in the issues of education, health, the issues of everyday life that touch all citizens.
So, I consider yesterday's development important and we will continue on the same path."
Asked about the appointment of an envoy by the UN Secretary General, the President said: "Yesterday, on my own initiative, I had a telephone conversation with the UN Secretary General during which he referred to the person he has chosen. We formally gave our consent as the Republic of Cyprus. The Secretary-General spoke in very flattering terms about the person he intends to announce, about his abilities, he knows very well about such issues as the Cyprus problem and how he can help.
For my part, I expressed my readiness to start discussions immediately. If there is political will, I believe that, yes, we can lead to the resumption of substantive talks from where they were interrupted. We also discussed the issue of the sea corridor for humanitarian aid to Gaza, it is something that the SG is very naturally concerned about, as is the international community, everything that we see getting even worse in recent days, and the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid should begin immediately."
Asked about the meeting between the Greek Prime Minister and the Turkish President, President Christodoulides said: "The Greek Prime Minister contacted me immediately after the conclusion of his meeting with Mr. Erdogan. I cannot make public everything he told me, but there seems to be a positive momentum building. From there on, all of us will be judged by the results."
Asked when the UN Secretary General's envoy will arrive in Cyprus, the President said: "He has not informed me of a specific date, but I believe in the New Year, immediately after his announcement, he will visit Cyprus."
Asked if he was satisfied with the briefing he received from Mitsotakis, the President of the Republic said: "From what I have heard, yes, I am satisfied. We will meet again next week in Brussels, in private. There I will have the opportunity to be informed even more specifically, in more detail, but, I repeat, because I understand your question, we will all be judged by the results."[/P "I DO NOT ADOPT ANY UNDERCUTTING OF ANYONE AND I HAVE NEVER ADOPTED SUCH PRACTICES. I HAVE NOTHING MORE TO SAY THAN WHAT I HAVE ALREADY STATED ON THE MATTER."
