The President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Christodoulides visited the area of Akruda, Limassol, where a large fire was raging last night.

In his statements to journalists, while in the area, the President of the Republic said: "The fire continues and it seems that the night will be difficult. I am here with the Minister and Mr. Gregoriou, just from my side, to express thanks to all those who are fighting and will continue to fight tonight to deal with this fire.

So far the situation is difficult, at the same time we note the fact that no residences are threatened, the Civil Defense was asked as a precaution from some houses to move (the residents), so that there is not any danger and I repeat the night will be difficult.

We have asked to be informed if we need to call for assistance from third countries, we have been told that so far such a need does not arise, we will of course monitor it and if such a need arises we will proceed to do so."

In response to a reporter's comment that there is information about suspicious movements of some people in the area in relation to how the fire started, the President said: "We should expect all information to be investigated, I have also been informed of some initial information that there seems to be a human factor, but we should wait for the experts to tell us after it is completed. First and foremost, this is the main thing, to completely control the fire and then we will look at this issue."

Asked if from the information received the fire is out of control, the President of the Republic said: "The fire is not yet under control, that is why all the forces are here, that is why they are constantly being reinforced and the aim is to bring the fire under control. Tonight necessarily all the air assets have been stopped, they will start at 6 o'clock in the morning and the objective tonight is to control it, to prevent it from escaping in other directions, so that we can deal with the problem even more."

Asked if we have an idea of the extent of the destruction, the President said: "It is a big disaster, if you see on the route and right and left of the road coming here it is a huge disaster, for which we will see after the fire is controlled how we will deal with this issue. The key issue in these difficult situations is that human life is not threatened, that's what's at stake, that's what needs to be ensured, everyone involved knows their job much better, I want to reiterate again, I'm not here to either give instructions or watch. We are here to express the gratitude of the state for all those on the front line."
