When someone is not even willing to discuss, it means he feels weak for his positions, President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides said today, noting that our side is ready for the resumption of talks on the Cyprus problem.

In his statements to journalists, coming to the DIKO event for the 20th anniversary of Cyprus' accession to the European Union, and asked about his meeting tomorrow with the personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for Cyprus, Mrs. María Ángela Holguín Cuellar, the President of the Republic said: "We have been in contact with Ms. Holguín throughout these days. Tomorrow we will meet again and I hope that positive results will emerge from this meeting."

What I can say with certainty is that, for our part, as we are doing, we will continue to take advantage of any opportunity to resume the talks. There is no other option for us.

Beyond that, immediately after the meeting [I HAD] with Mrs. Holguín, on the same day I informed the Greek Prime Minister, with whom we will speak again today.

I consider his trip to Ankara very important, especially at this time, not only for Greek-Turkish relations, but also for the effort that is being made on the Cyprus problem, and hopefully something positive will come out of his meeting with Mr.

I have personally conveyed some very specific ideas to Ms. Holguín, I don't want to comment on some headlines that are out there, and hopefully there will be some result."

Asked if energy can be an area of cooperation and convergence, the President said: "As you have seen, through the actions of the Republic of Cyprus we are cooperating with all the states in the region and in this framework we are ready to cooperate with Turkey, following the resolution of the Cyprus problem."

Even before a possible solution of the Cyprus problem, as you know, we had conveyed our readiness to define our maritime borders, always on the basis of the relevant Law of the Sea Convention. It is Turkey that refuses dialogue.

I repeat, the key issue at the moment is to resume talks.

I said something the day before yesterday, I will repeat it, and I conveyed it to Mrs Holguín. I cannot understand why someone would not even want to talk. When they do not want to discuss, it means that they feel weak for their own positions.

We are ready to discuss and to sit down at the negotiating table. We sincerely believe that there is no other option, the current state of affairs is not in the interest of either the Greek Cypriots or the Turkish Cypriots or Turkey or the EU or the region. So, we are ready to discuss and hopefully there will be a response."
