The European Council Conclusions send a very specific positive message to Turkey, President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides said tonight, urging it to seize the opportunity given to it.

Speaking to reporters on his arrival at the In Business Awards event, and asked whether he believes that the European Council Conclusions will put pressure on Ankara to come back to the negotiating table, given its reactions so far, the President of the Republic said: "Whether Turkey rejects it or not, the interconnection is there. And it is not a decision of the Republic of Cyprus, it is a decision of 27 EU member states.

We are not going to engage in a public debate, accusations and so on. The substance is to achieve the objective of resuming the talks and in this framework we are working with both the EU and the UN. Mrs Holguin is also coming in a few days.

We are working in particular with Germany. There seems to be a willingness to take a more prominent role, it played a role in Turkey's acceptance of Ms. Holguin's appointment, and we are continuing the effort methodically, with targeted actions, with a strategy. We know where we are going, we are not afraid of the talks and I hope that such facts will be created that will lead us to achieve the goal.

Certainly through these statements (on the part of Turkey) nothing is offered in a positive direction and therefore I am not going to follow."

Asked if the Conclusions will be a useful tool in the hands of Ms. Holguin, the President replied. It sends a positive message to Turkey, a positive message with the agreement of the Republic of Cyprus. A specific positive message, not generalities, very specific. And to tell Turkey to seize this opportunity."
