On Friday, 22 September 2023, the President of the Hellenic Republic, Nicos Christodoulides, will meet with the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York, the President of the Hellenic Republic said today.

In his statements to reporters after his visit to the Acropolis Gymnasium, the President of the Republic, asked whether he has been informed about the content of the meeting between the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey and what are the messages from Ankara, said: "We have been briefed by the Greek Foreign Minister and I must say that the briefing creates a perspective, but you understand that everything will be judged on the facts."

The meeting with the UN Secretary General has already been booked for Friday, when I will be in New York. And yesterday I wrote to the Secretary General again, asking him to go ahead with the meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader.

Yesterday the letter was sent, it was a message that we conveyed both from our Permanent Delegation and in my recent meeting with the Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations, and I hope there will be a response."

Asked if his letter to the UN Secretary-General referred to other issues, the President said: "In the letter I am focused on the issue of the meeting and of course on the Secretary-General's response to the Security Council's call for the appointment of a special envoy to explore the prospects for the resumption of talks."

Asked whether he expects a United Nations official to come to Cyprus, the President said: "I do not expect a descent to Cyprus from the United Nations Secretariat, we are in contact with Mr Stewart on this issue, and also the Permanent Mission in New York."
