We are at the final stage regarding the issue of visas to the United States of America (USA), President of the Republic Mr.
Speaking at the opening of today's Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace and addressing the members of the Government, the President of the Republic said: "I welcome Nicolas [IOANNIDIS] to the Council of Ministers and invite you all to stand with him in this great effort to continue the holistic approach to address the migration issue, in which many ministries are involved. The second thing I would like to mention is the historicity and the importance of the Strategic Dialogue Agreement between the Republic of Cyprus and the United States, and to invite you all to work for the implementation of the agreement. It touches many ministries, many issues, such as energy, security, trade, investment attraction, research and technology, culture. So, we need everyone's cooperation.
At the same time, in order to achieve the goal of the Republic of Cyprus joining the US program where Cypriot passport holders do not need entry visas, we are in the final stage, so I expect everyone to work for the realization of this goal.
The third thing is that we have an issue [IN THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS] today about supporting communities and fire victims not only in Paphos, but also in the other areas, in Ypson and Farmakas. An inventory has been done, it is important that we respond, as we promised, so that they can use their property to the extent possible, especially those who need it for irrigation and other issues. Then we will see if any adjustments need to be made. So, immediately after the approval today, I want to make sure that the payment of the relevant amounts will be made.
Also, today we will announce the extension of the support measures until the end of October, particularly on the issue of the extension of the electricity subsidy, taking into account the high temperatures that we have in Cyprus. The responsible fiscal policy that we follow, which also leads to continuous upgrades of the Cypriot economy, allows us to have a targeted social policy and allows us in this context to announce today the extension of the subsidy and some other measures, which we will discuss later.
Today we will also have a special Cabinet meeting on issues related to the Presidency of the European Council of the European Union (EU), which we are approaching. There will be a presentation by the Minister of State for European Affairs on what each Ministry needs to undertake, primarily where we are. We are at an advanced stage and that is positive, but it is a strategic goal of our Government to have a successful Presidency. I am confident that we can do it. Our experience after 20 years in the EU and the recognition we receive are just some of the assets that allow us to have a successful Presidency, but we need to prepare ourselves now."
