The President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides chaired a meeting of the Council of Ministers at the Presidential Palace today.
At the beginning of the meeting, addressing the members of the Council of Ministers, the President of the Republic said: "We have several important issues, which I want to discuss, including that of the Larnaca Marina, on the next steps. We need to move quickly. After all, we had started the preparatory work.
There are two important issues, which were also in our pre-election programme.
The first one concerns the approval of the proposal of the Ministry of Interior regarding the revision of the housing plans for the revitalisation of mountainous, marginal and disadvantaged areas.
It is important that we are adding more communities, more beneficiaries-we have students now among the beneficiaries-but we are also increasing the allowance that we as a state will provide, under that scheme, to pensioners.
There has been very good coordination between the Home Office and the Commissioner for Uplands, who has seen almost all the Ministers. There are some other actions that will follow in terms of mountainous and peripheral areas.
The second is the amending law that will regulate the establishment and operation of branches of foreign universities, either from member states or from third countries, in Cyprus. There is keen interest and it is something that I believe will significantly upgrade the quality of higher education in our country. Furthermore, it will implement one of the main objectives so that Cyprus becomes a quality educational centre. I underline the word 'quality' because this is our goal, to become a centre of reference for university education."
