President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides referred to the Cyprus problem and the case of Thanasis today at the opening of the meeting of the Council of Ministers at the Presidential Palace.
Addressing the members of the Council of Ministers, the President of the Republic said: "We will start with two issues. The first concerns our number one priority, which is our effort to resume the talks.
The personal envoy of the Secretary-General (SG) was in Cyprus for the third time. I want to salute her efforts, the efforts of the Secretary-General, but also the efforts of the international community. One of the messages she conveyed during the meetings we had was the support of the international community for the resumption of talks on the basis of the agreed framework.
We responded to all her invitations to start a dialogue, to see if this dialogue can lead us to a resumption of talks. Unfortunately, so far there has been no response from the Turkish side. Nevertheless, the effort continues, we must give diplomacy time. If there is political will, I am sure that the talks can be resumed and there can be a positive outcome, always on the basis of the agreed framework. In addition to the fact that we have been in contact with the family from the very first moment, in addition to the financial support that we have offered to the family, today we will take the political decision to appoint two independent criminal investigators, who will investigate all these 19 years, from 2005 to 2024, what should have been investigated and has not been investigated. For 19 years it seems that there were some facts that were not investigated. We do not take a position, we are not experts to take a position, which is why today we are taking the political decision to appoint two independent criminal investigators who will investigate this matter."
