President of the Republic Mr Nicos Christodoulides described as important the announcement by the Special Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General (UNSG) in Cyprus Mr Colin Stewart that the UNSG will soon announce the appointment of an envoy for the Cyprus problem.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a reception hosted by the UN Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus at the Ledra Palace, which was attended by Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, the President of the Republic said: "it was a meeting of a social nature."
It was significant that Mr. Stewart announced that soon the UN Secretary General - hopefully this week - will formally announce the appointment (of an envoy on Cyprus). We hope for a visit to Cyprus as soon as possible.
We are ready from our side. We know very well what we are seeking through the talks, we know what the final objective is and we will do everything possible from our side to achieve the final objective. We know the difficulties, the problems, and I watch and listen to the daily statements that are made. Everything will be decided at the negotiating table."
Asked if anything was said about the Cyprus problem during his conversation with Mr Tatar at the reception, the President of the Republic said: "we certainly discussed the Cyprus problem, among other things, but there was no negotiation. I reiterated to Mr Tatar my readiness and that I hope he will come to the table to achieve what we want, which is the resumption of talks.
The common ground is there, it is defined by the UN resolutions themselves and I hope we can get the talks resumed as soon as possible.
For us - you see what is happening in our region - there are no frozen crises, the status quo, the passage of time creates new fait accompli. We see the problems that present themselves every day in the buffer zone and we will do everything possible, precisely to lead to reunification, to the solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the agreed framework."
