The new Commissioner for Mountain Communities, Mr. Charalambos Christofinas, took office today.
In a statement to journalists at the Presidential Palace, Mr. Christofinas said: "I want to thank His Excellency the President for the confidence he has shown in me to appoint me as Commissioner for Mountain Communities. I know very well that the President of the Republic has an ambitious programme with regard to our mountain communities and what I want to assure from our side is that we will do everything humanly possible to ensure that every rural resident feels that significant improvement that he expects for his quality of life.
The President of the Republic has quite an ambitious programme.
The President of the Republic has quite an ambitious programme. We will be here day and night to implement it and we hope that at the end of the day the policy that will be implemented will reach every household in the countryside.
As far as the residents of the mountainous areas are concerned, what I want to say is that I personally know their anxieties and worries from the first light of dawn when they start to go to work until the afternoon and evening and the anxiety they have until the last member of the family reaches home.
The main pillars of the President's policy for mountain communities are the road network, which is among the priorities, health and education.
With these three policy pillars we are moving forward and, as with everything else, we hope for good cooperation with all members of the Government to bring about the best possible outcome for the people of the mountain areas."
