\The readiness of the competent authorities of the Republic of Cyprus to activate the "ESTIA" plan in case of evacuation of foreign nationals from Israel, was conveyed today by the Minister of Interior Mr.
In his statements on the sidelines of a press conference for the presentation of the Sponsorship Plan for the Strengthening of Resilience and Adaptation of Communities to Climate Change, asked whether Cyprus is ready to receive foreign nationals from Israel in case of evacuation, Mr. Ioannou said that all relevant authorities of the Republic are on standby and alert, if and when an evacuation is required, as has happened in the past, to respond successfully. As he said, "specific plans will be activated, such as for example the "ESTIA" Plan, and the competent bodies of the Government will be mobilised accordingly."
Asked whether the infrastructure available in Cyprus is sufficient to receive a number of people, the Minister noted that there is sufficient infrastructure for Cyprus to be used as a transit station. "We have responded and recently, last summer, when the ESTIA project was activated with complete success. There is always a limit to where we can respond and we cannot know in advance without knowing the figures. But we are here, there is a willingness from the Government, that is a given, if and when we are asked by other countries to carry it out."
Finally, asked if there is any communication with the Government of Israel, the Interior Minister replied in the affirmative. Contacts are being made both on the part of the President of the Republic and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also clarifying that the Ministry of Interior is ready to assist in the "ESTIA" Project through the Civil Defence.
