A wide range of issues were discussed today by Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry Natasha Pilidou during a meeting in Dubai with her UAE counterpart. Nicos Anastasiades in Dubai, Ms. Pileidou said that "I had a very constructive meeting today with the UAE Minister of International Trade who is responsible for both investments coming into his country and investments in other countries, so we had the opportunity to discuss a very wide range of issues, especially because he was also Minister for Climate Change.
We discussed in quite a lot of detail the potential opportunities in renewables, in green energy investment, in electricity cable, in electricity interconnection and the recent successful securing of funding from the EU which opens up the prospect of now securing private sector funding for the 50% that will not be funded by either the state or the EU, as well as other opportunities such as floating photovoltaics in the marine area of Cyprus, the possibility of energy storage and hydrogen and others.
We also discussed ways to enhance trade between the two countries. One area of particular interest is fish farming, where the expertise exists in both Cyprus and the UAE. There is already some cooperation that could be expanded using our maritime spatial planning and the possibility of locating such projects in the maritime area of Cyprus.
We also discussed the recent certification of haloumi as PDO and the UAE's special interest in animal husbandry because they consider the standards of animal husbandry in Cyprus to be particularly high. They also mentioned the possibilities of investing in activities related to sheep and goat farming and the given opportunity that is presented because of haloumi.
It is important that the Minister will assign a specific person to be in charge of the project team that will manage the issues for Cyprus and through this contact point and the contact point that will be identified by the Ministry of Commerce we will build specific technical teams for the issues that have been discussed so that everything can move forward at the same time.
