The Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Mr Prodromos Prodromou, made statements today in the House of Representatives regarding the need for replacements due to the pandemic.

Specifically, Mr Prodromou said: "Because these days there is pressure in schools, as well as in other areas, I want to clarify that when we talk about replacements in the field of education, we mean the procedure followed by the Education Service Commission.

So when we hear that 100 teachers were absent and 70 replacements were made, it does not mean that the other 30 were not filled. There are procedures and ways in the Ministry of Education where replacements are made. I say this because various figures are published which show that there is a difference between the number of absences and the number of replacements. But this is also done through substitutions and various other procedures. So that is why I had also appealed to the educational organisations to stop giving out various statistics in public, which probably create false impressions.

Otherwise, the effort continues, it is a daily struggle. I want to thank again both teachers and school administrators who I know are making superhuman efforts in these circumstances and to say that with today's Cabinet decisions on a new procedure for dealing with close contacts will also make our work in schools much easier and we will be able to more easily handle the cases of either employees and teachers or children who are close contacts. So we are hopeful that we will be able to continue as normal with attendance with physical presence."
