The Minister of Education, Sport and Youth, Ms. Athina Michailidou made statements to journalists today regarding decisions taken by the Council of Ministers, following proposals submitted by the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MESY).
Specifically, Ms Michailidou said in her statements: "The Council of Ministers today adopted a decision, following a proposal by the Ministry of Education, on the enrolment and transfer of children from schools abroad to schools in Cyprus. This is an important Decision, which makes it easier for Cypriots or foreign nationals who want their children to continue their education in Cyprus after attending school in the countries from which they come. At the same time, it also opens the way for people who come to our country to work, invest, settle, as well as the way for partnerships at various levels, thus facilitating business activity in our country.
At the same time, the Council of Ministers today approved the financial support, for the purpose of operating costs, of parochial education institutions, parochial schools in the United Kingdom. Specifically, the Association of Greek Parents, the Independent Greek Schools of England, the Independent Greek Schools of London and the Central Board of Education of the Archdiocese. This decision also marks the Government's support for the parish, for parochial education, and of course, with the implications that this has, for the very important national work that is being carried out there.
In addition, the Council of Ministers today also approved a grant to the Institute of Interdisciplinary Cypriot Studies at the University of Münster, a very important seat, which aims to promote the knowledge of students and the wider community about the history, culture and language of Cyprus, to promote research and the culture of our country and to contribute to information and awareness of the Cyprus problem.
Then, the Minister, responding to a journalist's question regarding the fact that the occupation authorities do not allow inspectors to enter the Greek Cypriot schools operating in Rizokarpaso, Michailidou noted: "This is a matter which is being handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We have been aware of this for some time. Indeed, any official, anyone who has anything to do with the evaluation or training of teachers there is prevented from going to the occupied territories, and this creates problems for us. As I have said, the issue is being handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a competent manner," the Education Minister concluded.
