The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Mr.Petros Xenophontos attended today, 22 November 2023, a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment regarding Akamas.
In his statements after the session, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment stressed that the President of the Republic gave clear instructions to freeze the works on Akamas in relation to serious interventions in the natural environment of the peninsula, stating that he himself was disturbed by the images he saw, noting that the purpose of freezing the works is to see if all that is being done is in line with what has been decided.
Xenophontos said he had the opportunity to visit the area last Tuesday and on Friday to listen to environmental organisations. The overriding issue was whether the Special Ecological Assessment was brought before the ad hoc committee before the construction plans were started and then whether the construction plans were given to the ad hoc committee so that they could look at them, review them and give their opinion. As he said: "Because there was this disagreement, I decided to order an administrative inquiry, which will be completed next Friday so that it can be fully seen what happened. And in any case, the specific ecological assessment should be incorporated into the construction plans so that we can be sure that it is taken into account during the construction of the projects."
Finally, Mr. Minister pointed out that he is not happy with what he has seen and heard and, therefore, we have decided to re-evaluate both the projects that have not been done, but also this project, with the aim of doing something softer in terms of the sensitive area and the sensitive Akamas National Park.
