The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr. Alexis Vafeadi and the Mayor of Larnaca, Mr Andreas Vyra, inspected the Larnaca-Meneos coastal road leading to the wastewater treatment plant. The road is located within the protected area "Larnaca Salt Flats" and faces serious erosion problems due to its proximity to the coastal front. The aim of the meeting was to take measures to prevent further collapse of the road and to address the problem in a way that ensures the safe movement of vehicles and the protection of the habitats and species of the area.
After the meeting, the Minister made the following statement to the media representatives. We have a unique endemic species which is found here, Limonium mucronulatum, which is found only in the Larnaca Salt Flats and nowhere else in the world, and it goes without saying that we want to protect it and we must protect it. That is why we responded immediately to the Mayor's call. With regard to the projects that will be carried out, we will give the specific environmental conditions that are needed so that no environmental problems are caused both for the projects that will be carried out immediately and for those that will follow. At the same time we have also discussed ways in which we need to highlight this uniqueness in the area and we will proceed with the next steps in the days to come.
Our goal is to do the work that will ensure the safe movement of the public and vehicles to and from the wastewater treatment plant, but at the same time protect this environmentally sensitive area."
