The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr Maria Panayiotou, accompanied by representatives of farmers' organisations, visited this morning the area of Avgoros where she inspected the damage caused to potato crops due to heavy rainfall.

As part of her visit to the area, the Minister made the following statement to media representatives: "We are here with the farmers' organisations and with officials of the Ministry to express in the most practical way our support for our farmers who have been affected by the weather conditions." She added that these damages are in addition to those recorded in the previous days.

Dr Panagiotou then stressed: "Together with the farmers' organisations and officials we have been acting proactively as early as Sunday evening when we had information from the Meteorological Service about the weather events that would follow, we made a circle of contacts with our farmers and saw what it is that they need together with the Departments. We made a joint decision to be ready with joint crews there and where needed to open the pathway for water to leave, to have an uninterrupted water supply during the night in case of frost, and of course to have our agronomists with our farmers by their side to help them.

I have given instructions to proceed immediately, as soon as the weather permits, with the absorption of the water, to record the damage and release the forms so that the farmers can tap into the Risk Management Fund without delay and get the compensation.

I owe a big thank you to the farmers' organisations that have been by our side to act proactively, and a big thank you, of course, to the officials of the Ministry who are here with us today to show in the most practical way that the Government, the State, is here to support the farmers."
