"The package of measures for Turkish Cypriots is ready," Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letibiotis said today, adding that the official announcement is expected.
In his remarks to journalists at the event of the Cyprus Union of Journalists for the cutting of the Vasilopita at the Journalists' House, the Spokesman, when asked about the package of measures for Turkish Cypriots that the Government is expected to announce, said: "The list, the package of measures is ready. We are waiting for the official announcement. This package concerns a wide range of modules that are relevant to the daily life of Turkish Cypriots.
In the new period that opens before us with the arrival of the UN Secretary General's envoy, we come with a sincere political will to continue to take initiatives to create the conditions for the resumption of talks from where they were interrupted on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality."
In the new period that opens before us with the arrival of the UN Secretary General's envoy, we come with a sincere political will to continue to take initiatives to create the conditions for the resumption of talks from where they were interrupted on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality.
He added that the announcement of the package would be made before the arrival in Cyprus of the UN Secretary-General's envoy.
Asked to comment on statements by Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar about cooperation between the two communities in the energy sector, the Spokesman said: "This has been answered repeatedly. The Cyprus EEZ, the natural wealth of the Republic of Cyprus belongs to the Republic of Cyprus, in accordance with international law.
The message we are sending both to Mr Tatar and to our Turkish Cypriot compatriots is that the resolution of the Cyprus problem is for the benefit of the whole of Cyprus, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. A solution on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality is what we believe the Turkish Cypriots also seek and believe in. On 30 January Ms. Olgin will be in Cyprus and there we will have to demonstrate our political will so that 2024 can be the year of redemption of our homeland."
Asked if there is a reluctance to take effective measures against fan violence, the Spokesman said: "There is no dithering. There has been a thorough discussion in the Cabinet yesterday, views have been exchanged today, the Minister of Justice and Public Order will attend before the opening of the CFC Executive Committee meeting to present the views and concerns of the Government. We will wait to hear the decisions of the CMP, to evaluate them and then, if necessary, further measures will be taken by the Government.
What the President of the Republic underlined, and it is a social imperative, is that such unacceptable incidents in playing fields with risk to life cannot be accepted or tolerated.
The State is doing everything possible to ensure the safety of citizens.
At the same time, we must recognise that there was a strong police presence inside and outside the playing field and it is not possible to have such a strong police presence and to need such a strong police presence in all playing fields in every match that takes place. The playing fields are not a battlefield. We will continue as a State to do everything possible."
Asked if further action would be taken, as the President mentioned yesterday in relation to "closing" stadiums, the Spokesman said: "The President will not take political responsibility into account, the safety of citizens is at stake here, he has said himself that nothing is ruled out at this stage."
What is paramount is to ensure that citizens are safe and that they and their children can watch the games."
Asked if the police are reviewing the measures, the Spokesman said: "The Police are constantly reviewing, evaluating the effectiveness of the measures, the potential for further measures as part of operational plans."
But we cannot expect only through increased police presence that such incidents will be avoided. Everyone must now take their own responsibility."
