The measures decided by the Republic of Cyprus - due to the violation of the buffer zone by the Turkish regime - were activated as of this morning, said Government Spokesman Mr. Constantinos Letibiotis.

In his statements today to journalists at the Presidential Palace, and asked about the meeting of the President of the Republic with members of the US 6th Fleet, the Spokesman said: "The head of the 6th U.S. Fleet is in our country, which is why it was considered beneficial to hold the meeting with the President of the Republic - and in terms of the framework of cooperation that exists - to thank the Republic of Cyprus for the role it plays with regard to the evacuations of third country nationals, including the United States.

Cyprus, as a pillar of stability in the region, is a reliable partner for both the US and other countries."

To another question, he said that "the cooperation that exists, particularly with regard to the evacuations of third country nationals, is excellent and any facilitation is being provided in the context of the activation of the Hestia project."

Asked if the US was asked to convey messages to Ankara in relation to the incidents in the buffer zone as well, the Spokesman said: "Representations have been made and through our Permanent Mission in New York to Ms. DiCarlo and the United Nations (UN) and we are in contact with all Permanent Members of the Security Council as to the planning and violation of the buffer zone by the occupation regime. We reiterate our full respect for the Security Council resolutions and call on the peacekeeping force, in accordance with its terms of reference under the Security Council (SC) resolutions, to secure the status of the buffer zone and restore the status quo as before the events."

Asked about the measures announced by the President of the Republic in relation to the issue of the violation of the buffer zone, the Spokesperson said: "Measures have started to be activated, there is a plan - we cannot say more - which has been activated as of this morning. Some measures are visible, some are not. We are waiting and we are in constant communication with the peacekeeping force. That is the objective, to secure the status of the buffer zone. At the same time, from the very first moment of the events at Maria's House, there has been an assessment and planning that is being carried out right now."

Asked if UNFICYP is part of this planning or if it has simply been notified of the measures, the Spokesman said: "As part of the cooperation with the peacekeeping force, it has been informed before the measures were put in place that if the status of the buffer zone was not restored within a certain timeframe, these measures would be triggered."

Asked: "The information we have from the peacekeeping force is that the situation remains unchanged. The peacekeeping force is present in the area and we are in constant communication with them."
