The meeting of the President of the Republic with the UN Secretary General in New York has been finalised and the date of the meeting will be announced in the near future, as well as for the President's other contacts, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letibiotis said today.
Speaking to reporters at the Presidential Palace, Mr. Letibiotis, asked if the President of the Republic has received the factual report on the incidents in Limassol, said that the President has requested it and that it is expected to be given to him within the day.
Asked if there is any news in relation to the contacts of the UN Secretary General's Special Representative for Pyla, the Spokesman said: "We have nothing new, we are in contact. Our positions are known, and in accordance with the unanimous statement of the Security Council, we are not going to accept anything that calls into question or differentiates the status of the buffer zone."
Asked if there is any news in relation to the issue of holding a joint meeting between the President of the Republic and the Turkish Cypriot leader with the UN Secretary General in New York, the Spokesman said there is no news, adding: "A meeting between the President of the Republic and the UN Secretary General has been set. The date of the meeting will be announced in the near future. We are in contact."
What the President of the Republic has repeatedly said is that such a joint meeting would be useful in terms of the prospect of resuming negotiations."
To another question, the Spokesman said that in New York the President would hold a series of contacts and once both the meetings and the dates were finalized, they would be made public.
Asked to comment on the content of the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Greece and Turkey yesterday, the Spokesman said that Foreign Minister Constantinos Kompos was briefed extensively by his Greek counterpart, and the Cyprus problem was part of the discussion. He added that "the prospects for the resumption of negotiations were discussed and the reference point was New York. The latest incidents in Pyla were also discussed".
