The five Permanent Members of the Security Council share our position on the appointment of an envoy of the Secretary-General for the Cyprus problem, Government Spokesman Constantinos Letibiotis said yesterday.

In his remarks to reporters after the President's working lunch with the Permanent Representatives of the five Permanent Members of the United Nations Security Council (P5), held yesterday, September 22, 2023, in New York, the Spokesman said: "At the luncheon, the President was briefed on his meeting with the United Nations Secretary General and the need, as our side sees it, for the appointment of an envoy to explore the prospect of resuming negotiations.

What we are pleased to note is that all five Permanent Members of the Security Council share this view, and it is also through the recent unanimous statement of the Security Council that they reiterated this need for the appointment of an envoy.

At the same time, the President of the Republic conveyed to them the efforts that our side is making to resume negotiations, to take the initiative through and by activating the EU, and we also look forward to their support, which they assured us of."

Asked if the issue of the Gate was discussed during the lunch, the Spokesman replied in the affirmative and added: "The President thanked the five Permanent Members of the Security Council because it was decisive and resolute in the attitude they have shown through a clear position, not only with regard to the incidents that took place in Pyla, not only with regard to the planning attempted by the occupying regime, but also by reiterating their commitment to the resolutions of the Security Council and the appointment of an envoy."

Asked whether the five Permanent Members of the Security Council will take action to ensure that there are tangible developments, the Spokesperson said: "The five Permanent Members also share our commitment to Security Council resolutions and to the appointment of an envoy, and it is through and by their own actions that this can help to create the prospect, the conditions, for an envoy to be appointed."

Asked about the terms of reference of the envoy, the Spokesman said: "To explore whether the prospects exist for the resumption of negotiations and to contribute to the process so that negotiations can resume."

Asked if the talks would start where they left off, the Spokesman said: "Of course, from where they have stopped, this is our stated position, this is the position reiterated once again by the President of the Republic, to resume negotiations from where they left off in Crans-Montana."

Asked if there is any development in relation to what is being discussed about Pyla, the Spokesman replied in the negative, adding: "We are still in contact with the peacekeeping force, if there is any conclusion you will be informed."
