Government Spokesman Marios Pelicanos spoke today about the participation of the President of the Republic in the Brest Summit and the contacts he had in the French city.

In his statements to the media from France, the Government Spokesman said that "on the sidelines of his participation in the international summit 'One Ocean', the President of the Republic had a brief conversation today with the President of France Mr. Due to the busy schedule of President Macron, who was in charge of the Summit, the two leaders agreed to meet again in the coming days, either next Wednesday in Paris or on the margins of the EU-African Union Summit to be held next Thursday and Friday in Brussels.

Earlier today, President Anastasiades had a meeting with the US President's Special Envoy for Climate Change John Kerry on the sidelines of the Summit, during which the US support for President Anastasiades' Climate Change Initiative was underlined.

The President invited Mr. Kerry to a leaders' meeting next October as part of the Cyprus Government's Initiative for coordinated climate action by the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

At the same time, the President briefed Mr. Kerry on developments in the Cyprus problem, the essential Confidence Building Measures proposed by our side, as well as on Turkey's ongoing provocations against the Republic of Cyprus. Charles Michel, whom he briefed on developments in the Cyprus problem, requesting the assistance of the European Union in promoting and implementing concrete Confidence Building Measures, while encouraging the Union to take initiatives, complementary to those of the United Nations, to resolve the Cyprus problem.

During the meeting with Mr. Michel also denounced the unacceptable and provocative incident in Deneia and more generally the harassment of Greek Cypriot farmers by Turkish troops inside the Dead Zone.

Concerning the specific theme he participated in during the Summit, President Anastasiades highlighted the importance of green shipping and referred in particular to the commitments made by Cyprus in the common approach of the Mediterranean countries to create a low-sulphur zone throughout the basin.

It is important to mention that this is the first international summit on the protection of the high seas and oceans, which was attended by Heads of State and Government from many countries around the world and which covered a wide range of issues such as combating illegal fishing, reducing marine pollution and other very important issues."

It is noted that the President of the Republic returns to Cyprus late tonight.

President Anastasiades will be accompanied in France by the Government Spokesman Mr. Marios Pelekanos, the Deputy Minister to the President Mr. Kyriakos Kousios, the Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs Mr. Vassilis Dimitriadis and officials.
