The President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides received today at the Presidential Palace the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) for the Cyprus problem, Mrs.María Ángela Holguín.
After the meeting, Government Spokesman Mr. Constantinos Letibiotis told reporters: "The meeting was very constructive and the President of the Republic reiterated to Mrs. Holguín our side's readiness to resume negotiations or even to meet with Mr. Tatar in the presence of Mrs. Holguín."
Mrs. Holguín leaves our country tomorrow. We look forward to her next visit to Cyprus and we will certainly await the results of the very important meeting today between the Greek Prime Minister and the Turkish President."
In response to a question, the Spokesman said: "This is Ms. Holguín's third visit to Cyprus. She has also held very important meetings in the meantime, both in European capitals and in Ankara. She has formed an opinion as to what the next steps should be in order to make the necessary progress on the Cyprus problem and these are the ones that are being discussed with the President of the Republic, I imagine they are the ones she will discuss with Mr Tatar in a moment."
In response to a reporter's remark that Ms Holguín said that more needs to be done, and asked what they are and whether she is urging the President of the Republic to take some action, the Spokesman said: "I do not think she is urging the President of the Republic, after all, the minimum that should be done during Ms. Holguín's stay in our country is a meeting between the President of the Republic and Mr. Tatar. Dialogue is not only the first step, it is the obvious step that should have already been taken. We reiterate our will and intention to hold such a meeting, because it is through dialogue that all concerns can be resolved, answered and addressed."
Asked if there is a timeframe for Ms. Holguín's return and if the cycle of her visits to Cyprus is now closing here, the Spokesman said: "We do not have that information. Ms Holguín is a personal envoy of the UN Secretary General, to whom she refers, and with whom she is in constant communication. The UN Secretary General himself wishes to be briefed by her on the issue of progress in efforts to resume negotiations. We will wait in the near future to see when her next visit to our country will be."
Asked whether the report that Ms. Holguín will submit to the UN Secretary General will attribute responsibility, the Spokesperson replied. The issue in this effort by the UN Secretary General himself, through his personal envoy, is to create the conditions for the resumption of negotiations. For our part, we have taken the initiatives to send not only positive messages, but also to create a positive climate for the resumption of negotiations, both through the announcement of the 14 measures addressed to our Turkish Cypriot compatriots and through the conclusions of the last European Council concerning Euro-Turkish issues. We look forward also today to the results of the very important meeting of the Greek Prime Minister."
Asked if Ms Holguín asked for more from President Christodoulides, the Spokesman said: "Nothing more has been discussed, the outcome of her contacts and the next steps have been discussed."
