The President of the Republic Mr.Nikos Christodoulides received today, at the Presidential Palace, the Executive Assistant Director of the Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch of the FBI Mr.Michael Nordwell.

During the meeting, the President of the Republic referred to the close relations between Cyprus and the United States that have developed in recent years, noting that the cooperation between the two countries extends in all areas.

He also noted that the strengthening of bilateral relations is a priority of his government, while he praised the role of the US Ambassador to Cyprus towards the deepening of relations between the two countries.

After the meeting, the Director of the President's Press Office Victor Papadopoulos told reporters: "The meeting was constructive, views were exchanged on the work that the FBI is doing here and on the assistance it offers to the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus in order to clear some cases, but also to clear the name of Cyprus throughout the world."

Asked to refer to these cases, Papadopoulos said that these are "cases that have been called upon to contribute to their investigation so that there is no shadow on the name of Cyprus and that its name as a service provider country is preserved. Service provision is a big part of the Cypriot economy and there should be no shadow."

And this is what the President of the Republic said. He told the FBI team that his goal is that there should be no shadow on the name of Cyprus."

Moreover, asked to comment on Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar's statements about two states and EU membership, Papadopoulos said: "Yesterday's statements are the same as those made by the Turkish side lately, about two states. This cannot be accepted."

As for Tatar's statements about the EU, he noted: "Cyprus is a member of the EU, there is also provision for the solution of the Cyprus problem. If Mr Tatar and the Turkish side return to the table and a solution of a bizonal bicommunal federation is found on the basis of the discussions we have had so far, with the contribution of the EU, the Turkish Cypriot community will enjoy all the benefits of the EU."

Asked about Ms Holguín's reference in her open letter to moving away from solutions of the past, Papadopoulos said: "Ms Holguín was clear, she was talking about the process, it has nothing to do with Mr Tatar's statements. We will await Ms. Holguín's report to the UN Secretary General. What we take from her letter is that she is continuing her efforts and that she is seeking a viable solution for a shared future. A common future and a viable solution are not compatible with the two states that Mr. Tatar is calling for."

In response to another question, Mr. Papadopoulos said that Ms. Holguín is continuing her efforts. "That is what we want, and the President said he will cooperate, as he is cooperating constructively and with proposals, to make this mission" of Ms. Holguín a success."

To another question, the Director of the President's Press Office said: "There is full understanding and full cooperation with the Greek Government, with the Greek Prime Minister. The President of the Republic has regular communications with Mr Mitsotakis, we are in full understanding", noting that "the diplomatic efforts made by the President of the Republic, both those that are visible and those that are not visible, are in the direction of activating the international factor so that the Turkish side can come back to the table for the resumption of negotiations from where they left off in Crans Montana.
