In a statement to journalists at the Presidential Palace, Mr. Andreas Iosif said in response to AKEL's criticisms that "AKEL likes unfounded criticism. In order to remove misinformation and in response to what they have been claiming in recent days regarding the increase in prices and the alleged responsibilities of the government, we should remind them that price increases are a global phenomenon resulting from the sharp increase in consumption, the increase in the prices of raw materials, which are also affected by geopolitical developments, but also by the distortions observed in the supply chain after the lifting of strict measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Inflation in Cyprus remains at controlled levels compared to other much larger economies. Moreover, our country is one of the few European countries that still apply the ATA as a compensatory measure.
Recognizing the issue that has arisen, the Government has already taken targeted measures to mitigate the problem, with particular emphasis on vulnerable households (e.g. price subsidy and VAT reduction for electricity, special allowance for mountainous areas, etc.).
The Government, of course, is responsible for strengthening our country's capacity to deal with sudden economic crises, such as the current one, by strengthening the framework of protection for vulnerable groups of the population, including by implementing policies that have taken us from an unemployment rate of 17% to 17%, by returning to consistently high growth rates, by implementing the EER, by Cyprus being one step closer to introducing a national minimum wage, by significantly increasing the incomes of low pensioners and by implementing a new holistic housing policy with a special focus on the needs of young couples.
We should remind AKEL that the progress that has been achieved comes at a time when in recent years Cyprus has had to face the great economic crisis of 2013 that they themselves created and when for two years now we have been facing an unprecedented health crisis with serious economic consequences.
As a government we will continue with seriousness and rationality, within the capabilities of the state and without jeopardising the prospects of future generations, with targeted solutions to solve the problems
