Today's meeting of the Labour Advisory Council discussed the issues of the national minimum wage, the strategy for the employment of third country nationals and especially students from third countries, while the interconnection of the management of migration flows with the labour market was discussed. There was an exchange of views and procedural decisions were taken on the continuation of the discussion of the issues and the constructive spirit of the social partners was confirmed despite the divergence of analyses and different approaches.

Regarding the National Minimum Wage, I would particularly like to mention my predecessors, the late Zeta Emilianidou and the dear Kyriakos Kousios, who promoted the institutionalization of the minimum wage, which was an important step in the right direction with a positive impact for workers and without negative effects on the economy.

In view of the renewal of the Decree on the National Minimum Wage, the role of the social partners is consultative and social dialogue is helpful. It is found that there is consensus among the social partners in the direction of the increase but at the same time there are divergences on the amount of the increase, as well as some other individual disagreements. The dialogue will be concluded within the next few days and the Government, having assessed all the data, will announce its decisions next week.

Our decisions will be balanced and well-informed, in line with the needs of society and the potential of the economy, in the context of the socio-economic responsibility that must characterise public policies to serve the public interest.
