The need to strengthen European social protection systems following the epidemiological crisis and the war in Ukraine was discussed at the Employment and Social Policy Council in Luxembourg.

The challenges in relation to the epidemiological crisis and the war in Ukraine are common to the Member States.

In this context, positions were taken in relation to the coping mechanisms and Minimum Guaranteed Income is the front line.

The EUS, as applied in Cyprus, is considered one of the most adequate in the EU.

I informed my counterparts that recognizing that benefits alone are not enough, the emphasis is now on the integration and inclusion of beneficiaries in society as a whole, with the aim of disentangling them from benefits.

Reference was also made to other coping mechanisms, such as the extension of the Tuition and Food Subsidy Scheme for Children up to 4 years old, which by a recent decision of the Council of Ministers covers all those entitled to child benefit.

Through the discussion, it is clear that policies at the European level will shift towards digital upgrading using AI in social protection systems, which will result in a more immediate response in providing assistance to vulnerable groups.

The Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare has already developed such programmes and we are in the process of preparing for more.

Equally important is the digital education of beneficiaries, especially of the elderly, which will be included in the National Strategy and the National Action Plan of the Republic of Cyprus for the elderly.
