[PIO] Statement by the President of the House of Representatives

I understand that today a debate is starting in the Committee on Institutions on the lifelong benefits of former Presidents of the Republic and former Speakers of the Parliament.

It is my personal position that these lifelong benefits should be abolished and all arrangements should be placed in a different, transparent and rational framework.

This is a practice that has been in place until today and which should be immediately and drastically reviewed. I therefore recommend the following:

1. 1. I personally waive it.

2. Grant of security measures to ex-officers to be approved only on the recommendation of the Police and introduce a re-evaluation clause every 5 years.

3. Secretarial allowance to be granted in terms of transparency in the procedures for assignment of work and payment of fees. Among other things, the purpose should be to record and classify the records and activities of the former official's term of office with delivery of the result to the State Archives and the preservation of international relations and contacts beneficial to Cyprus.

4. The revised regulations should apply to all former, current and future senior state officials.

For all this, pending the investigation by the services of the Parliament on what is in force in other modern countries, I intend to submit a specific Proposed Law.
