A meeting of the employees of the former contractor company with the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Mr.

After the meeting, the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. Yannis Panagiotis and the Minister of Transport, Communications and Public Works and Mr. Alexis Vafedis on the implementation of the government planning and the agreement with the trade unions on the labour issues related to the termination of the contract for the Management and Development of the Port and Marina of Larnaca.

After the meeting, the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. Yiannis Panayiotou stated the following:

"Today we visited the port of Larnaca and met with the employees of the former contractor company working for the implementation of the contract, which was interrupted, in order to inform them in detail about the implementation of the government's plan regarding the labour issues that concern them, in accordance with the provisions of the labour laws to ensure their rights and the continuation of their work, as already agreed with the trade unions representing them, whom we thank for their cooperation.

The upcoming period is transitional for the future management and development of this critical infrastructure and in this context all employees have the opportunity to be employed to continue to contribute to the operation of the Marina and the Port through the Larnaca Development Company. At the same time, the process of recording the work performed by them in relation to the work required is already underway so that they can be assigned tasks, while it has been pointed out that provision will be made for the future contractor to continue to employ them, in accordance with widely accepted practice.

Our State is social and our Government is people-centred, so the labour aspect has been prioritised as particularly important in the management of the situation as it had developed, and the smooth progress of things is confirming in this direction.

Finally, it is useful to point out that in our country labour relations have over time functioned smoothly through the respect of laws and agreements by the social partners on the basis of tripartite social cooperation between employers, employees and the state. Thus, although at the present juncture it is understandable that some may seek to make profits, whether business or electoral, workers do not need either 'workers' or 'workers' mothers' and should not be instrumentalised for this purpose."
