The debate in the Internal Affairs Council dealt with the problem in Ukraine and of course with the issue of the protection of Ukrainian refugees, thousands of whom are crossing the borders entering the European Union.
I consider it an important development that for the first time the EU has activated the directive on the protection of Ukrainians who choose to enter Europe.
At the same time, however, the issue of European security in the European area was also of great concern to us, since it is well known that among the thousands of refugees who have crossed the borders, there are also people who should not have crossed.
Nevertheless, the humanitarian issue is high on the priorities of the European Commission and the Home Affairs Council and we are ready to give maximum protection to the Ukrainians in an attempt to address and help solve the problem.
But we will also help the countries that are currently facing the migratory burden from Ukraine, such as Moldova, Romania and Poland, of course, which are currently bearing a very heavy burden. And Cyprus has clearly stated its position that in the event that these countries ask for relocation assistance because of the large numbers, this should be on a mandatory basis, so that it is real solidarity, and real and substantial assistance, and not left on a voluntary basis.
