Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, in a statement to the media today regarding the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus to create a maritime humanitarian corridor to Gaza, said the following:

"The effort of the Republic of Cyprus to create a maritime corridor for the transfer of humanitarian aid to Gaza continues. A corridor of a safe, secure nature, with fully guaranteed departure and transit, high flow and high frequency.

We have constructively participated from the outset in a debate that is now of concern to the entire international community. We are proving that we are an active part of the region, contributing with positive and constructive proposals.

We have a specific methodology based on our comparative advantages:

Firstly, geographical proximity.

Secondly, an existing, comprehensive infrastructure network.

Thirdly, good neighbourly relations with the countries of the region.

And finally - and most importantly - a relationship of political trust with Israel. A relationship that has been building for years and has not just emerged in the last few weeks.

We have had numerous contacts and meetings with EU Member States, institutions, regional states and international organisations, and we are shaping our approach taking into account the positions, concerns and proposals of our interlocutors. Firstly, the flow will be unidirectional, starting from the Republic of Cyprus and will not be about people, but will be exclusively about goods. Secondly, the security of the cargo is intertwined with the security of Israel, without whose consent there can be no corridor.

We are therefore in constant contact with Israel. A technical team went to Israel this week, and yesterday, as you know, I visited the neighbouring country and had meetings with both the President and the Foreign Minister. It was agreed to set up a structured dialogue with working groups of an interdepartmental nature. Objectively and realistically, it is developments that will influence the effort, as well as the question of timing and synchronization of will and events.

There is still a long way to go and a given uncertainty. We, we will continue our effort actively, methodically and extrovertedly."
