Regarding the reaction of the Guilds of SEK and PEO in relation to my statements on the issue of productivity and competitiveness of the Cypriot economy, I would like to point out the following:

As Minister of Finance I support the institution of ATA and the specific guilds which expressed their opposition to the meaning of my statements should have been well aware of this, as at an event of the guilds on the institution of ATA prior to my becoming Minister where I was honoured to be the keynote speaker, the positions and views I provided in my speech were clearly in favour of the institution of ATA.

At the same time, I emphasize in a categorical manner that, as Minister of Finance, I do not identify with any side in the negotiation process for the implementation and operation of the institution, but only with the interests of the Cypriot people, which can only be secured within the framework of a healthy and competitive economy.

As Minister of Finance, I am responsible for maintaining the resilience and soundness of the economy and bearing in mind the key indicators of the Cypriot economy, my intention is to encourage the social partners whose mission and intentions I fully appreciate to safeguard the interests of the workers, so that, among other parameters, the productivity and competitiveness of the economy, as well as the need to continuously improve the equal distribution of income, are weighed.
