The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Dr Maria Panayiotou met today with the members of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, during which she presented the Ministry's vision, work and planning for the period 2023-2028. After the session, Dr Panagiotou made the following statement to media representatives. I was briefed on the key objectives and priorities of the Ministry, which are of course set out on the basis of the governance programme. Our main objective is the sustainability of the primary sector, fair and stable income for farmers, improving the quality of life of farmers and of course, food security.

The MPs elaborated on the issues of concern to them, submitted their questions which we answered and explained the issues they raised. We explained the forthcoming update of the strategy concerning the primary sector, which is being done together with farmers' organisations so that it can respond effectively to the needs of farmers."

On reports by MPs that the Government had not supported farmers in raising production costs, the Minister said that we were working on measures for targeted support for farmers and recalled that the Government had already provided, by decision of the Council of Ministers, financial support of €4 million to raise production costs.

Finally, he noted that the Ministry is working to improve the Risk Management Plan and, in particular, with regard to the timing of the payment of compensation and the creation of those infrastructures that will help, to the extent permitted, to decouple our farmers from the weather.
