It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you to the Ministry of Defence for the signing ceremony of the Special Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry and the Open University of Cyprus. This event is another important step towards achieving the goal we have set as a Ministry to establish mutually beneficial partnerships with academic institutions. Through the special Memorandum of Understanding, another avenue is opened for the training of permanent National Guard officers who meet the criteria and wish to apply for scholarships in the postgraduate programmes of the Open University of Cyprus.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the Open University of Cyprus and the Ministry of Defence came into force in May 2015. Our cooperation includes joint participation in research projects, exchange of information and data, cooperation in education and training, joint participation in technocratic level committees and development of technological applications of common interest. In addition, we seek to transfer knowledge and leverage expertise from both sides for mutual benefit, while promoting actions.
In addition, our efforts are focused on creating a network of educational institutions and agencies specializing in areas of common interest through the Ministry's Security and Defence Academy and coordinating activities within the European Security and Defence College.
We aim to effectively communicate our country's defence and foreign policy to the academic community through national and international training activities.
The Special Memorandum of Understanding signed today sets the framework and criteria for permanent officers and non-commissioned officers of the National Guard to claim six (6) full scholarships for the academic year 2024-2025 in all postgraduate programmes of the Open University of Cyprus, with the exception of doctoral programmes, as follows:
- Two scholarships for enrolment and attendance in the New Interdisciplinary Master's Degree Programme "Security and Defence", which will be offered by the Open University of Cyprus, in collaboration with the School of Guards.
- Four scholarships for enrolment and study in any other Postgraduate Degree Programme, offered independently by the Open University of Cyprus.
In conclusion, I would like to express my thanks and gratitude for your presence here today and for your willingness to deepen our cooperation. I am confident that the signing of the Special Memorandum will redefine and deepen the framework of the existing cooperation.
