Health Minister Poppy Kanari signed a Memorandum of Understanding with her Maltese counterpart Christopher Fearne to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Cyprus and Malta in the health sector. The Memorandum was signed on the sidelines of the European Union (EU) Health Council in Brussels.

An important part of the agreement is the exchange of knowledge and expertise in the field of pharmaceuticals. In particular, bilateral cooperation includes issues related to pricing and reimbursement of pharmaceutical products and ensuring universal access to medicines for citizens. The cooperation also includes the need to maintain the quality of healthcare without compromising the sustainability of national health systems, and provisions for joint procurement of certain limited-need pharmaceutical products.

"The Memorandum of Understanding we have signed today," said Ms Kanari, "confirms the intention of the two countries to further cooperate on issues of common interest in the health sector. It is an important tool in the hands of the two countries that enhances their capacity to exchange expertise, promote standards and strategic measures, cooperate and ensure equitable access of their citizens to high quality health services and medicines."
