The Republic of Cyprus has secured additional funding of €30 million from the European Commission, following the successful selection of the Proposal, entitled "Upgrade of the capabilities of the surveillance system", submitted by the European Funds Unit of the Ministry of Interior, as the Managing Authority of the Internal Affairs Funds. The Proposal was submitted in the framework of the Specific Action Call for Expressions of Interest, entitled "Electronic surveillance systems at the external sea border (sea border e-surveillance)"

The purpose of the Proposal is to upgrade the capabilities of the surveillance system of the maritime borders controlled by the Republic, with the aim of a more effective control to prevent cross-border crime and illegal migration. The Proposal was prepared in cooperation with the Coordination, Search and Rescue Centre and was selected among other Proposals submitted to the European Commission, in the framework of the evaluation and on the basis of meeting specific criteria.

By adopting policies and targeted measures, the European Commission provides additional support to Member States, such as Cyprus, with the ultimate aim of effectively managing migration flows.

The project will be co-funded by the European Union's Border Management and Visa Policy Instrument BMVI.
